"Taste of Mardi Gras" Coming Friday, February 12, 2010
|
Taste of Mardi Gras was created in 1997 as a fundraiser for the Cenla Chapter of the Louisiana Restaurant Association (LRA). Since all Chapters of the LRA are assumed to be self sufficient, raising their own funds in which to operate, the Cenla Chapter needed an avenue to create income. The first year it was held was in conjunction with the Grand Opening of Alexandria's Riverfront Center in October of 1997 and was named “Taste on the Riverfront.” There were approximately 14 food booths and only half of the hall was used for the event and approximately 350 people attended the first “Taste.”. The date of the event has since been changed to coincide with the Alexandria Mardi Gras weekend of events to offer visitors a Friday night event and a reason to come early to Central Louisiana for the Mardi Gras celebrations and stay for the weekend. This premier event is the “kick-off” event for the “Mardi Gras weekend” in Alexandria.
Today, “Taste of Mardi Gras” has grown tremendously, hosting over 3000 guests in 2007, and over 3500 in 2008 and 2009 and now utilizes the whole Riverfront Center facility to host the event. Proceeds from the event benefit the Cenla Chapter of the Louisiana Restaurant Association with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the LRA Education Foundation for Hospitality, Restaurant, Tourism and Culinary programs in Louisiana. This foundation includes the “School to Career” program that began locally in August 2008, at Pineville High School. The Cenla Chapter of the LRA was pleased to announce that the local charity that benefited from this event in 2008 and 2009 was The Christus Cabrini Children's Miracle Network right here in Central Louisiana. CMN has received over $30,000. in proceeds from this event two years consecutively.
This fundraiser features over thirty (38) local restaurants, caterers and food and beverage suppliers who provide small “taste” portions of their signature dishes and beverages. In addition to the “taste,” there will be live entertainment, a Second Line Mardi Gras parade and a silent auction. Following the “Taste,” there will also be a “citywide” dance featuring live entertainment with great dancing music beginning at 9:00PM and lasting until midnight. It is truly an exciting event suitable for the entire family! Tickets are available at the following locations: Alexandria Pineville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, Atwood' s Bakery, Carino's Italian, Children's Miracle Network Christus St. Frances Cabrini Foundation, Chili's, Critic's Choice, Both Locations, Copeland's, The Cottage, Eddie's BBQ on MacArthur Dr., Julia's Restaurant,Lea's Lunchroom - Lecompte, Logan Farms, La. Restaurant Association, ,Outlaw's BBQ, Outback, Roly Poly, Spirits Food & Friends just to name a few....
